NC Zoo: Take the kids and go!

November 13, 2009 1 comment

With summer behind us, a day trip to the NC Zoo is a wonderful way to spend some time outdoors.  The zoo is situated among the forests and streams of North Carolina’s rolling central piedmont.  Located at the foot of the Uwharrie Mountains,  just outside Asheboro, this natural setting provides a compatible environment for animals from two continents.

You will discover more than 1,100 animals and 40,000 plants along five miles of shaded pathways.

And if you would like to enjoy a special indoor experience, check out the zoo’s Adventure 4D Theatre, an amazing way to experience the sights, sounds and yes–even the smells–of a wildlife conservancy.  Shot entirely on location at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, the film features never-before-seen 3-D footage of Africa’s wildest animals including elephants, rhinos, giraffes, buffalos, zebras, cheetahs and lions.

The state zoo has been a continually evolving project since its opening in 1976 and is the first zoo in America to incorporate a natural habitat as the basis for resource development and management.
